May 16 – 31, 2026

May 19 – A 21-year-old Brooklyn, NY man was charged with theft by deception as a result of a Detective Bureau investigation of fraud reported at a Route 22 auto dealership.

May 22 – Officers were detailed to a Morris Avenue pharmacy on a report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, the suspect was located in the parking lot by responding officers. The suspect, a 40-year-old East Orange woman, was arrested and charged with theft, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, and an outstanding warrant out of South Orange. Merchandise totaling $11.99 was recovered and returned to the pharmacy.

May 26 – A 45-year-old Springfield man was charged with theft by deception as a result of a Detective Bureau investigation of fraud reported by a Springfield resident.

May 29 – On May 16, Officers responded to a Route 22 hotel on a report of a male harassing an employee. As a result of a follow-up investigation by Detective Bureau personnel, a 30-year-old Neptune man was charged with lewdness.

It is with deep sorrow that the Springfield Police Department announces the passing of our retired friend and colleague, Sergeant Angelo Bonavitacola.

This Memorial Day, the Springfield Police Department honors and remembers the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
