We want to give a special thanks to all attendees and our partners for yesterday’s film screening sixeyefilms, Resistance Cinema ATL, and . It was such a successful day learning in community and discussing the realities of extreme heat for workers in Atlanta and across the country! This is what it looks like when the community shows up for immigrant workers and the rights of all workers.

Extreme heat claims the lives of high-hazard, low-wage industry workers around the world every day. Despite heat-stress and heat-related illness posing life-threatening risks for these workers, their employers often refuse to take even the most basic and life-saving precautions, like ensuring proper breaks, clean water, and shade or relief from the heat for their employees. Together, we can move toward a future where a safe and healthy work environment is a reality for all.

Which heat stress precaution do you believe employers currently fail to take at the highest rate?

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, the day the Emancipation Proclamation was finally enforced on June 19, 1865, ending chattel slavery in the Confederate South.

We honor the Black abolitionists who fought tirelessly for freedom and the generations of Black leaders, workers, and organizers who continue the fight for liberation, dignity, and justice.

As an organization committed to immigrant and worker rights, we recognize that many of the systems that endanger Black workers today are rooted in the legacy of slavery and systemic oppression. On Juneteenth, we reaffirm our commitment to dismantling those barriers, advancing safe and equitable workplaces, remaining rooted in abolitionist ideals, and standing alongside Black workers demanding the protections, respect, and opportunities they deserve.

Today, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the ongoing work to build a more just future for all.

Sur Legal Collaborative’s Worker Leaders Solidarity Fund is be a standing, ongoing fund that centers resourcing and empowering workers from high-hazard, low-wage industries in ways that are directly responsive to their needs.

With summer heating up, we are attuned to heat stress and heat-related illness increasing, and the focus of our next campaign for the WLS Fund will be to raise money to be able to provide the workers we’re in community with some heat-stress emergency kits.
