Police nab Chasefu woman for burning hubby to death over co-wife dispute

A CHASEFU woman has been arrested for setting a house on fire, killing her 48-year-old husband following a domestic dispute over lobola and plans to reinstate co-wife.

According to witnesses the suspect, Mary Vuma reportedly torched the grass-thatched house in which her husband, Jackson Nyirenda, was sleeping in, located in Mukanile Village, Nkhanga area, between midnight and 01:00 hours on Friday.

Nyirenda sustained severe burns all over his body and succumbed to his injuries around 22:00 hours on the same day while admitted to Lundazi District Hospital.

Eastern Province commanding officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that the couple had earlier gone out for a drinking spree and returned home around 20:00 hours.

"Upon their return, the suspect prepared supper, which they ate together before going to bed. While in bed, a misunderstanding arose regarding the deceased’s intentions to bring back his second wife, who resides in Lundazi," stated Mweemba.

It is reported that the Vuma had previously damaged the co-wife’s house in Lundazi.

Furthermore, the couple also quarreled over the improper distribution of their daughter’s lobola.

Following the altercation, Nyirenda left the matrimonial bedroom to sleep in a nearby smaller house, which was meant to accommodate the second wife.

It was at this point that Vuma set the house on fire and fled into hiding.

The deceased was rescued from the inferno by his 16-year-old son, Tenson Nyirenda, who noticed the flames.

For a while, a glimmer of hope lit up that Nyirenda had survived.

However, the victim had already suffered fatal burn wounds and died.

Mweemba said properties valued at K4,550 were also destroyed in the fire.

"The named suspect is currently in Police custody to assist in the investigations and awaiting to be formally charged and court appearance soon," added Mweemba.
