ZAMBIA COMMEMORATES AFRICA FREEDOM DAY

Zambia today on 25th May joined the rest of Africa in commemorating Africa Freedom Day.

The theme for this year is “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063”.

The Republican President of Zambia Dr Hakainde Hichilema this morning lead other dignitaries at Freedom Statue in Lusaka, where the Wreaths Laying Ceremony is held every year, in commemorating Africa Freedom Day. This ceremony is done in honouring the fallen heroes who fought against colonialism and brought about independence of African countries. Some of the leaders who fought for liberation of Africa against colonialism are Nkwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, Ahmed Sékou Touré of Guinea, Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso, among others.

Zambia, under the leadership of her founding father, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, played a crucial role in helping neighboring countries like Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, among others, to fight against colonialism. That is why, today, Zambia is held in high esteem as a country that selflessly helped most countries in the Southern region of Africa to be liberated from their oppressors.

Locally, the ceremony also honors the fallen heroes and those still alive. A few of Zambia’s freedom fighters who are alive, were in attendance at the Wreaths Laying Ceremony. President Hichilema took some time to greet these freedom fighters who were in attendance.
