when a computer was running on xp(now phased out but still on some computers) CRUSHES and you do not have the recovery CD but would like to recover your computer and files,here are a few steps to follow;
1. Boot from cd

2. select to repair using restore console cd (the recovery console provides system repair and recovery functionality)

3. a blue screen will apear requesting for recovery cd (which you do not have i assume) ,hit the ENTER button on the keyboard and wait for the computer to display a black screen,
4. once the black screen apears,wait till C:\> apears then type chkdsk /r (remember to leave spacebetween k and /)

5. hit the the computer will automaticlly start the recovery
