The Wild Ride

🐕‍🦺 North Luangwa is known for their black rhino population within Zambia, amazing scenery, as well as their newer tourist community self-catering campsites. But within North Luangwa lies a shining initiative that is little known to the outside world, the Canine Unit. The highly effective detection unit started in late 2015 with 5 handlers and is currently on 5 dogs and 16 handlers. They have facilitated over 800 apprehensions with illegal wildlife products and aided in removing over 600 illegal fi****ms from the criminal system that were for poaching across the northern part of Zambia. North Luangwa Canine Unit proudly promotes gender equality, with currently with 10 women and 6 men, highly trained and extremely effective in the field. The NLCP links livelihoods and landscapes by selecting handlers directly from the communities around the national park, which gives rangers a sense of ownership and pride.

Over the past 6 years, several instances of Certification on the canine unit have been completed, allowing the unit to get outside opinions from some of the best canine practices in the world. American Society for Canine Trainers has been a big part of our growth and knowledge during every certification. During the last couple of months, we had a visit from Dr. Chris Aycock, the President of ASCT, for the certification of all 16 handlers and we are pleased to announce that all 7 newly trained handlers have passed the certification with some exceeding expectations.

Frankfurt Zoological Society wysscampaign

Zambezi Animal Welfare Services was set up in 2015 with the aim of improving the welfare of domestic animals in and around Livingstone. Their work involves rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming, community education in animal care and animal rights, mass vaccination and population control through neutering drives.

The Wild Ride is backing ZAWS by helping fund their neutering and vaccination drives and making sure their rescued animals are well fed! The Wild Ride is proud be donating £800 to ZAWS to help them continue their fantastic work.

JICA ZAMBIA COMMENCES PROJECT TO TRANSFORM THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE INTO A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

The Japan International Cooperation Agency has formally commenced the implementation of “Clinical Studies Enhancement Project for School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zambia”. The 3 year project which will run from 2021 to 2024 is aimed at supporting the highest learning institution in the country in producing competent veterinarians who will undergo clinical studies based on global standards.
Through this project, the University of Zambia – School of Veterinary Medicine (UNZA-SVM) will receive state of the art Veterinary equipment from the Embassy of Japan in Zambia through its Grant Aid fund under the Economic and Social Development Programme. Donated equipment will include specialist veterinary X-ray and CT scan machines, Mobile clinic, Osirix software, veterinary anesthesia systems among other equipment’s. Furthermore, the project will also lead to the review and improving of the School of Veterinary curriculum and enhancing the capacity of the lecturers and other staff in the faculty. Veterinary experts from Hokkaido University will be dispatched to Zambia at various stages of the project to support the successful implementation.
Speaking when he hosted the delegation from JICA Zambia office, UNZA Vice Chancellor Prof. Luke Mumba thanked the people of Japan through JICA for the support and collaboration, which dates as far back as 1983 when the government of Japan funded the construction of the UNZA – School of Veterinary Medicine (UNZA-SVM) and donated equipment. He said this donation would play a big role in positioning the UNZA-SVM into a center of excellence that will become more competitive and attractive in the region and beyond.
JICA Zambia office Chief Representative, Mr. Kazuhiko Tokuhashi on Monday 27th September led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the UNZA Vice chancellor in order to introduce Prof. Okumura and Ms. Seki, Project Chief Advisor and Coordinator respectively, the two Japanese experts will work closely with their UNZA counterparts in implementing the project.

ザンビア大学獣医学部を対象にした新しいプロジェクトが開始しました
ザンビア大学獣医学部（UNZA-SVM）を対象とした、「ザンビア大学獣医学部臨床教育強化プロジェクト」が開始されました。国際基準に沿った形でUNZA-SVMの臨床教育実施体制を強化することで、最終的にはUNZA-SVMから優れた獣医師を輩出することを目標としています。
本プロジェクトは、日本大使館により実施される無償資金協力との連携を想定しています。X線検査機器やCTスキャンなど臨床教育を行うために必要な機材が導入されること
となっており、それらを活用しつつ本プロジェクトで技術指導を行う予定です。また、本プロジェクトでは北海道大学獣医学部の教授が専門家としてザンビアに派遣され、UNZA-SVMへの指導にあたる予定です。
9月27日に、ザンビア大学への表敬を行い、新しくプロジェクトに着任した2名の専門家の紹介を行いました。副総長のLuke Mumba教授からは、1983年にJICAの支援によって建設されたUNZA-SVMの校舎と、機材の供与について感謝の言葉が述べられたとともに、今後UNZA-SVMを南部アフリカ地域における獣医研究の一大拠点に成長させたい旨の発言がありました。JICAは、今後もUNZA-SVMと共にザンビア大学の発展に貢献します。
