TUESDAY TEA
By Kapampula Chilufya
Theme: “Be The Message”
Text: Matthew 23:1-35
There is no Christianity without the practice of it, does this statement get to have a meaningful stand in your life? Equally there is no profession in having faith in the Lord Jesus without bearing fruit. Our call to follow Jesus is not just a theoretical one but one which is highly practical. The Bible repeatedly brings to the fall the aspect of bearing fruit as can be seen in John 15. What it simply brings to the fore is the aspect of being a message, being the radiance of Christ – Are you and I reflecting Christ in all the spheres and avenues of life?
Jesus Christ in the portion of scripture (Mathew 23) for our consideration today points out to the Pharisees and teachers of the law as hypocrites, calling them hypocrites is not at all vulgar language, it is who they are. In simple terms a hypocrite is simply an ACTOR, for instance one can act to be a ra**st or a thief in a movie but in real life that person is not a ra**st or a thief. So it was with the Pharisees and Teachers of the law. They had a form of godliness but they denied it power. The question we must ask ourselves is that am I a real disciple / follower of Jesus or I am simply an actor? If we are merely actors the same thing of us being hypocrites can be said.
Did you know that there are people who have no bibles to read or simply they cannot just read the bibles but all they can read is yours and my life? What virtues and characteristics are we radiating to the world in need? What light are we shining in this sin stained world? What are the specific examples that Christ Jesus brings to light on the practices of the Pharisees and Teachers of the law that is not in correct standing with what the Lord requires? The Lord repeatedly says “Woe to you Pharisee and Teachers of the law……….” Being the message requires that we must practice what we preach and not say one thing and yet do the other. It entails that we must at all times follow what the Lord requires of us. We must never be like sign posts that point people where to go but don’t get to go the same direction.
In being messages it means our lives must be the radiance of Christ, we must always point people to Jesus in both theory and practice. What would be our message if our character is devoid of what we preach. We must always preach the word of God at all times, if possible we can use words, this statement does not mean we cannot share the word of God using words but it often means our words must march our actions / character. Many times if not all times our test of Christianity is felt by our immediate community i.e. home, work or could it be what it means to be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the world mea as we can see in Acts 1:8.
Let us all point people to Jesus by not just being talkers but doers of the word – Be the message. If perhaps you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior or you want to rededicated your life to God, the Lord Jesus’ hands are open wide enough to embrace you – He is still saying come unto me all you are heavy laden and I will give you rest. The call is go and bear much more fruit meaning go and be the message. Be the salt and light of the world. The terms can be interchangeably used but the bottom line is go and be the message. If you want to surrender your life to the Lord Jesus can surrender your life right where you and ask the Lord forgiveness and allow Jesus to come into your heart. If you have prayed or you want further help you can reach out to us at Scripture Union Zambia and our media and response team will get in touch with you. May God bless and keep you – remember to always be “Be The Message”
