Q: If I have a closed gene pool herd of rabbits, when should I introduce new bloodlines? When should I change my bucks and does

A: In a closed gene pool herd, you introduce new bloodlines when production is declining or looking for a trait that you don't have in your closed herd, say maybe you desire large litters and you don't have that trait in your closed herd, you outsource rabbits with such traits from another rabbitry.

When you replace your rabbits it's also dependent on how intense you breed your rabbits, but typically a doe with 6-8 litters per 12 months cycle should be still productive for 24 months, but replace your females when production starts to decline if it starts to decline at 14 months into production replace that doe.

Bucks typically stay productive for about 3-5 years but also it's dependent on how often you breed them so you should also replace them when production stats to suffer. If it suffers at 2 years old replace it, if it is still productive at 5+ yrs, keep it.

Part of the reason our mission is to get rabbit meat to low income households, which often eating healthy for them is a luxury.

Rabbit meat that isn't brine injected.
