In Pattern drafting the Key number often referred to as a primary, baseline, or key measurement. It is crucial in pattern drafting because it serves as the foundational, non-negotiable anchor from which all other pattern measurements are calculated. It ensures the garment has a consistent, accurate fit, minimizes fabric waste, and allows for precise scaling in pattern grading.

Patterns are two-dimensional representations of a three-dimensional body. The key number provides the central measurement around which the garment is constructed, acting as the foundation that prevents the pattern from being too tight or too loose.
In drafting, if the base measurement is wrong, the entire garment’s fit will be compromised. A key number provides a precise starting point. When developing a collection or using a pattern, a key measurement ensures that all components align correctly, providing consistent sizing, which is vital for both custom-made and mass-produced clothing.
By establishing a key number first, pattern makers can avoid costly errors, reducing the need for re-drafting and saving on fabric. Once a basic block is created using these key measurements, it becomes easier to change styles, such as modifying necklines or adding darts, without losing the original intended fit. Building a strong foundation in pattern drafting is crucial.
There are several different techniques and methodologies to establish the "key numbers" to create a base pattern (sloper/block) in pattern drafting. These methods vary based on whether the goal is a bespoke fit, industrial sizing, or a quick, freehand design.
