elorMittal South Africa in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of education initiated a state of the art program to enhance the level of understanding to science and mathematics in schools. This vision was achieved through our main sponsors ArcelorMittal South Africa. ArcelorMittal science Centres are interconnected aligned to support the National Science and Technology in the their call to improve the performance of Mathematics and Science in schools by providing equipment and facilities in communities where resources are limited. ArcelorMittal Science Centres participate and host different science competitions, exhibitions and science fairs. In 2006 ArcelorMittal South Africa together with the Gauteng Department of Education commenced on their first partnership that was to benefit the Vaal Triangle Community in Sebokeng through a Science Centre. This is a non profitable organization. ArcelorMittal Science Centre is a Centre of excellence that seeks to stimulate interest in science and provide information, knowledge and skills training to teachers, learners and out of school youth. ArcelorMittal Science Centre in Sebokeng was opened in 2006, Our Centre is divided into three as follows:
Science Centre: To generate an interest in Science amongst learners from a Primary level through fun science shows
Exhibition Hall: well equipped with more than 40 science and mathematics exhibits that are interactive visually attractive with colors. Giving them instructions and detailed explanations that make it easy to apply and understand a science concept. School program:-It is a state of the art program aimed at assist and support science learners from grade 10-12 in Mathematics and Science Subjects to improve their performance. Our facilities are well equipped and enable learners and educators to obtain practical experience in all aspects of curriculum. Learners receive transportation for free. Computer Community Development project: its a community based program aimed to improve the community by empowering them with computer skills. Mobile Science Laboratory: To reach large numbers of learners and out of school youth to motivate them to choose science subjects and pursue science related careers. To assist under resourced schools that are not part of our schools program through winter school program for grade 12 learners. ArcelorMittal Science Centre started with 12 schools focusing on grade 10 learners from district 8, learners receive support from our knowledgeable educators who are expects in formal education in science. The schools received formal education in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science and English. In the opening year Through our schools program and science Centre we manage to improve the average percentage of learners by 10% per annual ,mentor and skill up educators, develop a career guidance program aligned with ArcelorMittal South Africa’s objective and manage to identify and expose (number) to the field of Science and Mathematics. In 2007 40 learners from each school, best performing learners in Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Science were selected to join the ArcelorMittal Science Centre school program and the number of participating increased to 15 grade 12 schools, 7 grade11 schools and 8 grade 10 schools making it 30 different school which is 1200 learners who are receiving first class quality education. In 2009 another Science Centre was officially launched in Saldanha by Mr. Kriel (GM Saldanha works) and Ms. Rose (Director of the Western Cape Education Department) sponsored by ArcelorMittal South Africa. ArcelorMittal Science Centre Saldanha Works operates within the framework of ArcelorMittal’s corporate responsibility transforming strategy in collaboration with Western Cape Education Department with the main aim of improving the quality of Mathematics, Science and Technology education in West Coast. Activities at ArcelorMittal Science Centre Saldanha Works focuses on the school program.
