✨It is our natural instinct as mammals to birth in the dark.
We need the combination of natural sunlight during the day and natural darkness at night to produce melatonin.
While melatonin is the hormone that regulates our sleep, during labor it synergises with oxytocin to enhance birthing waves.
This is why often, birth surges are stronger at night ( and we birth workers are mostly night workers)
For this reason, darkness is one of the vital conditions that help ensure a smooth birth.
There can be candles, lava lamps, string lights, but ultimately darkness is what creates an ambiance of softness and comfort.
Security and peace.
It is so profound to observe that often the moments preceding a birth are dark and when a baby is born light follows, with a new day and a new life.✨
