12 Tips of website Do’s and Don’ts
1. Don’t Use Frames. Frames are extremely bad for SEO and can create a poor user experience.
2. Do Write Unique and High Quality Content. On the interent, good content reigns supreme. It will be good for search engines, generating traffic, and soliciting inbound.
3. Don’t Use Tables. We prefer CSS over tables because tables load slowly, are bad for search engines, and make maintenance more time-consuming and expensive.
4. Do Use Dashes, Don’t Use Underscores. Dashes versus underscores is an age-old question. Short answer, go with the dash.
5. Do Adhere to Web Standards. Most websites on the internet today do not adhere to web standards, which results in pages that are not accessible and do not look the same in all browsers. Of course, you website will work fine without completely valid code, but for forward compatibility, we suggest validating all code.
6. Web-Safe Colors? It’s a toss up! We generally stick to web-safe colors for the 1% of internet users that have older monitors or browsers. But, you’re probably fine if you use the entire color palette.
7. Do Use Standard Fonts. Standard fonts are a set of fonts guaranteed to display across most browsers and operating systems. For maximum compatibility, only use these fonts.
8. Do Make Sure Your Website Is Cross-Browser Compatible. It’s always important to make sure your site looks the same, regardless of browser or operating system. Click here for more information and tools.
9. Flash… Use With Discretion. If done right, flash can be a great way to add interactivity to your website. But if done wrong, it can be slow-loading and poorly optimized for search engines. However, Google can index Adobe Flash files… So, we’ll let you decide if flash is a good choice for your website.
10. Do Create a Sitemap. XML sitemaps ensure that search engines can find all of your pages. Do create one.
11. Don’t Launch an Unfinished Website. Be sure to dot your i’s and cross your t’s. Our website launch checklist will help you out.
12. Do Use Meta Tags. Yes, meta tags are extremely important, both for SEO and improving your click-through rate.
