Diarrhoea Outbreak Hits Zimbabweans Returning Home from Cape Town

It never rains but pours for Zimbabweans returning home from Cape Town, with scores of migrants now battling diarrhoea during their journey back to Zimbabwe.

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that 10 buses transporting Zimbabwean migrants from Cape Town will bypass the Musina Repatriation Centre in Limpopo after passengers reportedly developed diarrhoeal illnesses during the trip.

Instead, officials say the migrants will be processed en route before proceeding directly to the Beitbridge Border Post to avoid exposing other migrants housed at the repatriation centre.

Musina Repatriation Centre manager Albert Matsaung said authorities had taken precautionary measures to prevent those travelling on the affected buses from mixing with other undocumented migrants at the facility.

"What we have picked up is that these buses coming from Cape Town, obviously, we are going to make sure that they are processed on their way here. They may not be coming to the centre," said Matsaung.

"Remember, those are the buses that are earmarked for Zimbabwe. What it means is that they were supposed to take those people to Zimbabwe. You might find that our officials in the provinces have processed those buses."

The development comes as thousands of Zimbabweans continue returning home from South Africa following intensified immigration enforcement operations targeting undocumented foreign nationals.
