WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS, WE WERE MADE TO SURVIVE
Have you ever thought of some of the dangerous destinations in the world? Well, I’m sure you can name a few, think of the state of its tourism, and does the perception stops tourism? The answer is no – and why?
And firstly let’s start by identifying what makes a city to be dangerous:
Throughout history, cities have become more dangerous with higher homicide rates where poverty has worsened, unemployment has increased, migration from the region has accelerated and law and order institutions have weakened or become corrupt.
The drug trade and the associated presence of rival criminal gangs has also been proven to destabilise peace and security in cities around the world.
South Africa also featured prominently in the top 50, with Nelson Mandela Bay (46th), Durban (44th) and the capital city Cape Town (15th) all ranking.
Cape Town, the so-called ‘murder capital’ of a nation continually plagued by violence and racial tension, has been in the top 10 in previous annual listings and has been placed in the top 20 most dangerous cities since Security, Justice and Peace began analysing homicide rates.
In conclusion! Let us all free to travel, ‘’travelling is painful, but you leave something behind and take experience away with you’’
Travel Safety tips:
• Keep your travel plans, including accommodation details, to yourself.
• Don’t hitch hike.
• Try not to travel at night, unless you are with a tourist guide.
• Avoid isolated areas of the cities you visit, especially at night.
• Ask for your tour/travel agent for advice of ‘safe’ vs ‘unsafe’ local areas.
• As general rule, city streets that include children and women suggest the area is safe for families.
• Keep a photocopy of your important documents in a safe place.
• Use ATMs during the day when there are people around.
• Try to rely on credit cards than cash.
• If you are mugged, don’t fight back. It is better to lose a few dollars and a wristwatch than get injured.
