One of the hardest parts of this job isn’t the dogs... it’s learning to protect your own boundaries.
When you’re passionate about helping, every message feels urgent. Every phone call becomes an emergency. So often, people wait until things have reached breaking point before asking for help, and your instinct is to drop everything and try to fix it.
But that’s not sustainable.
As trainers and behaviourists, we can’t pour from an empty cup. We need time to rest, recharge and be present for our own families too. Saying “no” doesn’t mean we care less. It means we’re protecting our ability to keep doing this work well for the dogs and the people who truly need us.
Boundaries aren’t selfish—they’re necessary.
