🔥 Understanding the Fire Danger Index (FDI) 🔥
As we move through the fire season, one of the most important tools available to landowners, fire managers, municipalities, and emergency services is the Fire Danger Index (FDI).
The FDI is a scientifically calculated forecast that predicts the potential for fires to start, spread, and become difficult to control. It is determined using a combination of weather factors such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and fuel conditions.
When temperatures rise, humidity drops, vegetation becomes dry, and strong winds are forecast, the Fire Danger Index increases. As the index moves from Low through to Extreme, the likelihood of rapid fire spread and dangerous fire behaviour also increases.
The FDI provides an early warning system that helps stakeholders:
✅ Plan controlled burns safely
✅ Position firefighting resources effectively
✅ Implement preventative measures
✅ Protect lives, property, and natural resources
Understanding and monitoring the daily Fire Danger Index is not just the responsibility of fire services, it is an essential part of responsible land management and community safety.
Before conducting any burning activity, always check the daily FDI forecast and ensure all legal and safety requirements are met with your local Fire Protection Association.

The KwaZulu-Natal Province has received relatively below-average rainfall during the summer season. As a result, dam levels in most parts of the province are currently lower than compared to this time last year. Furthermore, an assessment of ENSO indicators shows a high probability of the development of an El Niño cycle, which has been termed as a super El Niño by various media publications.
