*Q&A: Matric Upgrading in Howick – What’s Changing & What It Means for You*
_Part 2: Practical questions learners and parents are asking_
*Q1: Why can’t I just register in April like before?*
*A:* The DBE exam registration deadline is March. After that, the system closes for that year. In the past, some centres accepted late registrations and rushed the work. From 2027, we won’t. With only one exam series per year and a 50-learner cap, we need the full cycle to teach properly. Registering in April means you’re already a year behind.
*Q2: How does the syllabus change affect me if I wait?*
*A:* The DBE revises prescribed texts and content every year. In English, a novel you studied in 2024 won’t be examined in 2026. In Physical Science, practical weightings shift. If you wait 2 years, you’re not revising—you’re learning new content with less time. Early registration locks you into the current syllabus and gives you time to master it.
*Q3: What if I only failed one subject? Do I still need to start in July 2026?*
*A:* Yes, if you want to use the final May/June intake in 2027. For the October-November 2027 exams, we recommend starting in July 2026. One subject still needs practice papers, timed tests, and revision. A 3-month rush rarely produces a pass. The learners who improve fastest are the ones who start early and treat it like a full subject.
*Q4: What did the Centre offer before that was different from other places?*
*A:* Three things:
1. *Early start:* Classes began in July, not March, giving 15+ months of preparation.
2. *Small groups:* Max 50 learners meant teachers could track each student.
3. *Subject specialists:* Not general tutors. You were taught by people who know the NSC exam structure.
Most learners only used the last 3 months of that cycle, which wasted the advantage.
*Q5: How will these changes affect employment and bursaries in Howick?*
*A:* Many jobs, SETA learnerships, and bursaries require Grade 12 with specific subjects and minimum APS scores. If you delay, you miss application cycles. Over 5 years, that’s 2-3 bursary cycles lost. Employers also prefer candidates who complete on time. Delayed matric signals poor planning to recruiters, even if that’s not fair.
*Q6: What if government policy changes again and blocks me from returning?*
*A:* That’s already happening in some cases. Learners who’ve been out of school for 3+ years are being told to re-enter at Grade 10. The safest move is to act while you still qualify for direct matric entry. Once that window closes, it’s much harder and more expensive to get back.
*Q7: Is 50 learners per year enough for Howick?*
*A:* It’s not about “enough.” It’s about what we can teach well. A class of 50 with daily assessments and feedback produces better results than a class of 150 with monthly tests. If demand is higher, we’ll refer learners to accredited partners, but our responsibility is to maintain quality for those we admit.
*Q8: What’s the real cost of waiting 1 year?*
*A:* Roughly: - 12 months of lost earning potential if you could have qualified for a job or learnership.
- Higher fees next year.
- New syllabus content to learn.
- Higher APS cut-offs for university.
For most learners, 1 year of delay costs more than the full year’s tuition would have.
*Q9: Can I work and study if I start in July 2026?*
*A:* Yes. That’s why we run afternoon and evening classes for upgrade learners. But it only works if you start early. Trying to work full-time and cram 7 subjects in 4 months is why most people fail. Early start = manageable workload.
*Q10: What happens after the final May/June intake in 2027?*
*A:* That exam series ends permanently. From 2027 onwards, all learners write in October-November only. There will be no second chance in the same year. If you miss October, your next chance is October the following year.
*Q11: How do I know if I’m ready to upgrade now?*
*A:* Come in for a free assessment and counseling session. We’ll check your previous results, identify gaps, and tell you honestly if you have enough time. If you’re not ready now, we’ll give you a plan for the next intake. Honest feedback is better than false hope.
*Q12: What’s the single biggest mistake learners make?*
*A:* Waiting for “the right time.” The right time is before the deadline. The system doesn’t pause for personal circumstances, and the syllabus doesn’t pause for you. Learners who treat upgrading like a side project fail. Learners who treat it like a job pass.
*Q13: Where do I register for the final May/June 2027 intake?*
*A:* At Howick Academic Tutoring Centre office. Registration opens 25 May 2026 and closes 15 June 2026. Bring your ID, previous results, and a deposit to secure your place. Only 50 spaces—once they’re gone, they’re gone.
*Bottom line:*
The Centre can’t create time for you. It can only give you the structure to use the time you have. Use it early, or explain later why you didn’t.
