LEGAL BATTLE OVER HALAAL CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: WOOLWORTHS FACES COURT CASE
Retail giant Woolworths is under scrutiny as it faces a legal challenge over allegations of religious-based requirements imposed on poultry suppliers. The matter emerged when Pumla Mahuma, co-owner of Grandchicks PTY LTD, declined a supply agreement requiring halaal-certified slaughter, citing a conflict with her Christian beliefs and unfair business practice. Did halaal certifying bodies become a monopoly in South Africa that conflicts with current legislation?
In August 2024, major egg supplier L Gromer PTY LTD approached Grandchicks to process its "Mleqwa" range—egg-laying chickens at the end of their production cycle. The offer required strict halaal slaughter, including religious rites performed by Muslim slaughterers. For Mahuma, these were incompatible with her faith.
💬 “This isn’t just business—it’s a matter of faith. I cannot compromise what I believe for a contract,” she said.
The case raises important questions:
• Why does Woolworths, in a country where Muslims represent ~2% of the population, exclusively stock halaal-certified poultry?
• Can a secular corporation require religious certification from suppliers?
• Are individual beliefs within corporate leadership influencing policy?
The halaal industry’s connection to Zakat—Islamic charitable giving—has led some critics to call for greater transparency around certification choices.
Mahuma filed the case with the Equality Court starting 16 July 2025, which allows self-representation, but may require legal counsel given the scale of the dispute. She is inviting the greater Body of Christ to stand with her in their prayers and if possible any financial support would be welcome in order to sustain her legal journey as she defends supplier autonomy and freedom to trade without halaal requirement restrictions.
