Much appreciation to Eric Lieberman for donating a copy of his debut novel "The Boy in the Barrel" - some of the research for his book was done at the Jacob Gitlin Library. ๐๐๐
A fictionalised story based on the life of Izzy Lieberman, the authorโs grandfather. In 1889, eight year old Izzy fled the pogroms with his father and arrived in Cape Town. However, due to the chaos on arrival at the docks before the Anglo-Boer War, Izzyโs father vanishes. Izzy learns to survive among the cityโs homeless boys who become his family.
Eleven years later he is drawn to the diamond diggings at Kimberley and there he comes face to face with the family he thought he had lost forever.
