Don’t Put Me in a Box (And I’ll Try Not to Put You in One Either)

Lately I’m in a season of self-discovery and healing — learning more about who I am, how I think and feel, and why I respond to the world the way I do. And something that keeps coming up for me is this:

We are so quick to put people into boxes — even ourselves.

You mention you're feeling overwhelmed and suddenly, it's "You have anxiety."
You feel a bit flat or quiet for a few days and someone suggests you have depression.
Your child is energetic, curious, busy — and it's immediately "That kid has ADHD."
Or they're sensitive and emotional — and we call them “too much.”

I’m not saying these diagnoses don’t have a place. They absolutely do. There’s incredible value in understanding how our brains and emotions work. Getting proper support can be life-changing. But… we’ve started using labels for everything. Sometimes we rush to name things instead of feeling them. Sometimes we want to explain everything neatly, instead of holding space for someone who's just… going through it.

Maybe it's because we’re uncomfortable with grey areas. Maybe we find safety in structure and certainty. Maybe it’s what society has taught us — that in order to understand something or someone, we need to name it, categorize it, or control it.

But the truth is: we’re not built for boxes.
We are layered, evolving, and so beautifully complex. We change and shift depending on our season, our circumstances, our growth. What was true of me five years ago might not be true today. And that’s okay. We’re allowed to grow out of old versions of ourselves.

I say this with love — to you, and to me:
You don’t have to fit in the box someone else gave you.
You don’t have to shrink yourself to be more “understood.”
You don’t need to tick all the right boxes to be enough.

So maybe instead of asking “What box does this person fit into?”
We ask, “What story are they living?”
Or, “What do they need right now?”
Or even, “How can I meet them where they are?”

I’m learning to do this for myself — to show more grace, and leave space for who I’m becoming. And I’m learning to offer that same grace to others too.

So today, if you’re feeling a little out of place, or like you’re too much, or not enough, or just not fitting in — maybe you were never meant to.

And that’s a good thing.
