An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a knee injury that can cause symptoms like pain, swelling, and a popping sound. The tear can be partial or complete, and symptoms are generally more severe with more extensive injuries. Trouble standing is just one sign that you need immediate medical attention.
With partial tears, it's also possible to experience little to no ACL tear symptoms at first. This sounds like a good thing, but it can result in you continuing your activity, further compromising your ligament and potentially worsening the tear. If you suspect a partial tear, it's important to see a board-certified orthopedic/sports medicine physician so that you do not do further damage.
SIGNS OF A POSSIBLE ACL TEAR
💥 Hearing a "pop"
💥 Knee swelling/pain
💥 Knee Instability
After an evaluation with possible in-clinic diagnostic testing, our physicians may order additional diagnostic testing (mri) or refer you to a surgeon for a surgical consult. However, many patients with just partial tears often benefit from our orthobiologic treatments that involve minimal downtime and a shorter recovery time than waiting for it to heal on its own.
