Sam Elliott was born on August 9, 1944 in Sacramento, California, and today he rides into his 81st birthday still commanding every frame. From humble beginnings as a guestโstoic in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Gunsmoke (1972), he drew first blood in leading roles with Frogs (1972) and broke through as the reflective lifeguard in Lifeguard (1976).
His unforgettable turn as the driftโwood cowboy in Mask (1985) cemented his status, then he brought Louis LโAmourโs legends to life in The Quick and the Dead (1987) and earned a Golden Globe nod for Conagher (1991). Veteran praise followed for Buffalo Girls (1995), Gettysburg (1993) and the enigmatic Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998).
In recent years, Elliottโs deep drawl has echoed from the Academyโnominated warmth of A Star Is Born (2018) to the gritty frontier of 1883 (2021โ22), winning him a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance. Heโs also thrilled fans in Justified, The Ranch and The Hero.
With a Screen Actors Guild Award, a National Board of Review prize and nominations across Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys, Sam Elliott remains the living emblem of rugged elegance and timeless storytelling. Hereโs to many more rides at sunset!

TEPEE INTERIOR, circa 1905. Edward H. Boos captured the view at the Flathead Reservation in northwest Montana. To better see details, PC users should click the image. The maleโs braids were wrapped, and he was holding cards. A large meat fork was at the lower left; three coffee pots were in the foreground. Bowls and spoons were to the right. Interior shots were uncommon in field work since film speeds were slow. Faces of the females had unrepairable blur from motion, but I used Photoshop to reveal as much detail as possible elsewhere.
Edward Boos was a Missoula photographer known for his photos of the reservation. The Montana reservation is the fourth largest in the USA. It has 5,000 enrolled members of the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreilles tribes, and about 25,000 non-Native residents. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
