Welcome to Watoto Poa, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a platform for 1st & 2nd generation immigrant kids and youth to connect, learn, and grow. Our mission is to address the unique challenges faced by immigrant children and foster a sense of community by providing opportunities for them to connect with one another, learn about their heritage and culture, and participate in commun
ity events and activities. Our goal is to create a sense of belonging and support by providing academic support, mentoring, tutoring, and other resources to help students succeed in school. Through our program, we aim to increase graduation/completion rates for youth (8th and 12th grade) and improve access to higher education, whether that be through college, trade school, or other vocational programs. We provide information about available programs, financial aid, and other resources to help students pursue their educational goals. We also recognize that immigrant children may face unique social and emotional challenges, such as language barriers, cultural differences, and discrimination. To address these needs, we connect them with counseling services, peer support groups, and other resources in their schools and community to help them navigate these challenges. Our mentorship and leadership opportunities provide access to adult mentors who can provide guidance and support, as well as opportunities for children to develop their own leadership skills and give back to their community. We also provide peer-to-peer mentorship, where we pair 1st generation and 2nd generation immigrants to share their experiences and learn from each other. Our program also aims to employ youth during summer and weekends for tutoring, baby-sitting, running errands, organizing community events, and supporting the elderly in the community. Youth are involved in fundraising for the program by showcasing their talents and learning the different aspects of managing a non-profit organization. This gives them a sense of responsibility and helps them gain essential skills in financial management, event planning, public speaking, fund raising, and communication. At Watoto Poa, we see a future of well-adjusted immigrant children, proud of their culture, excelling in the education system, involved, and thriving members of their gateway communities. Join us in our mission to provide a platform for immigrant children and youth to connect, learn, and grow.
