Latinos won big at the polls in Massachusetts—and our communities are reshaping who holds power
From Boston to Springfield, Holyoke, Worcester, Lawrence, Chelsea and Lynn, Latino leaders were re-elected, new voices broke through, and local governments now look more like the communities they serve. Boston’s City Council is now 30% Latino (in a city that’s ~21% Latino), Lawrence holds 10 of 11 council seats with Latino officials, and Chelsea’s School Committee is now 78% Latino, serving a student body that is 89% Latino. 
In Springfield and Worcester — the largest cities outside of Boston — Latino candidates secured key City Council and School Committee seats, including top citywide vote-getters and history-making victories that expanded Latino representation in two of the Commonwealth’s most important hubs.
These results are not an accident—they’re the result of years of organizing, coalition-building, and Latinos showing up, running, and voting in record numbers.

At a historic moment for Latino representation, both The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald chose to exclude every Latino candidate from their City Council At-Large endorsements — even though Latino candidates earned significantly higher vote totals in the primary than three of those endorsed. This omission sends a painful and harmful message to our community — a community that now makes up nearly 20% of Boston’s population, 14% of its workforce, and 10% of its business owners. Our contributions drive this city forward, yet our voices remain overlooked in moments that matter most. Unidos in Power calls on Boston’s media institutions to reflect the full strength, leadership, and impact of the Latino community. Representation is not symbolic — it’s essential.

The power to change this lies with us. Early voting has already begun, and voting will continue through Election Day on November 4. We urge every Latino voter to turn out, to stand up, and to make our presence felt at the ballot box. To our allies who understand that having Latinos at the table matters — we ask you to stand with us, vote with us, and ensure that Latino voices and leadership are part of Boston’s future.
