My chickens are eating my seedlings. 🐤

Hopefully yours are not... here are 3 other garden pests that might set you back this spring!

Cutworms. These beige/grey caterpillars will be moths one day, but first they will sever your seedlings at the base overnight. You can protect your little seedlings with a physical barrier - like half a solo cup around the base of your seedlings. Already have them? Sprinkle a dusting of diatomaceous earth on the soil.

Slugs. Leaving a slimy trail behind, these guys can defoliate your seedings SO quickly, that they don't have a chance to recover before they can't photosynthesize. From placing half a grapefruit in the garden, to spreading eggshells throughout, there are tons of organic and creative ways to protect your seedlings.

Flea Beetles. Established plants can handle the damage, but little seedlings get peppered with tiny holes, stunting or killing them before they have a chance to flourish! Use a floating row cover to protect your little seedlings - especially brassicas.

Keep that row cover on hand to protect from cabbage worms next month. 👍

Your landscape should do more than just look nice.

Raised beds full of food. Young fruit trees growing year by year. Native flowers buzzing with pollinators. Space for kids to play, explore, and connect with the outdoors.

We love helping families turn underused lawns into outdoor spaces that are beautiful, productive, and full of life. 🌱

Memorial Day is a great time to plant, but it's a bit more nuanced than 'green means go'...

True or False?

- You should wait until Memorial Day to plant your veggies

False! Many cool-season crops (like lettuce and peas) should be planted earlier.
Didn't plant them yet? No worries! You can succession sow these, and plant cool season crops in the fall too!

- Planting later leads to stronger, healthier plants.

False... Delaying planting can shorten the growing season and stress crops in summer heat. Things like peppers and eggplant are time sensitive and really need the full season to thrive.

- After Memorial Day, you don’t need to worry about weather anymore.

False! Cold snaps and heat waves can affect young plants. Keep your eyes on the weather and take some time to set up drip irrigation to ensure your plants are getting all they need during weather fluctuations.
