As some of you may know, the PWC BOCS created a "Racial and Social Justice Commission" late last year. The stated mission of the commission is included at the bottom.

The Commission will meet at least monthly and the next meeting is on Feb. 4 (Thursday) at 6:30 in the Dr. A.J. Ferlazzo Auditorium at 15941 Donald Curtis Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22191. These meetings are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and include a time for public comment. Please encourage community members to participate in giving their thoughts on the importance of the mission and the direction that should be taken, along with anything else you'd like the Commission to be mindful/aware of. Public comment time is 3 minutes per participant.

Think about sharing this especially with the groups/individuals whose voices are too often left out in local governance matters.

Mission: "The Commission will examine, among others, the police department’s policies and practices, including its hiring practices and use of force protocols. The Commission will assess how the county government delivers its services and the diversity and inclusion of the workforce providing these services. The Commission, in partnership with the Prince William School System, will examine how the public school system’s policies are impacting children of color."

Criminal justice reform is not just a national or state discussion – it’s a local one. Listen to episodes 5 & 6 where we discuss the County’s plan to construct a $46 million Juvenile Detention Center and wonder why that money isn’t being used to invest in our youth instead ?

Join us as we discuss the proposed building of a new juvenile detention center in PWC and it’s implications on our community. Let’s address the school to prison pipeline.
Listen to episodes 5 & 6 for the two part conversation. Be sure to share and tell us what you think!

A great number of comments calling for increased teacher/admin diversity, resolving inequities in access & addressing over policing of Brown & Black kids in tonight’s community forum for the Superintendent Search.
Please add your voices on Thursday @6 pm (see earlier posts).
In addition to the comments above, we’re advocating for:
-A superintendent that reflects the lived experiences of many in this County
-Someone who commits to diversifying the KLC and desegregating our schools
-Someone who calls for equity esp. w/regard to East/West
-Someone who enacts reformative justice practices

The more people that speak to these issues, the more weight they will get.

If you can watch the BOCS Meeting, please do. Or watch the recording after to make sure you see who speaks, what communities and experiences they represent and what they say.
