A friend of a friend had gotten his mother on Medicaid without professional assistance. I saw the home was for sale and I knew a family member had been living with the mother for several years. It turned out that no one at DSS had told them that a caregiver sharing a home and keeping a loved one out of the nursing home was entitled to at least the value of the home property. Once I helped him, the State allowed the funds from the home property sale to be transferred to that caregiver and a woman who cared for her mother had money to set up her first retirement account.

I got the nicest compliment from one of the DSS workers. She said she was glad that I would be working with this woman because I am a strong advocate for my clients. How observant is that! She might have moved up to being the smartest person at DSS (in an entirely biased poll run by me)!
