Have you ever wanted to quickly send someone a picture from your Google searching? Or a snippet from an article you are reading online? Cut, Copy and Paste are three of the most important functions on any computer, and make tasks like these a breeze. They allow a user to grab copies of existing text from a website, email, or program and move them to another place. What many don’t know is the possibility to copy multiple pieces of text and store them on a place called your computer’s Clipboard.
When a user hits Ctrl + X to Cut or Ctrl + C to Copy a piece of text, a computer holds that piece of data on the “Clipboard” before eventually moving it out when Ctrl + V is pressed to Paste it to its final destination. The “Clipboard” is something all phones and computers have. It acts as an invisible box that holds onto those floating pieces of information before they get placed. A very useful addition to this is by replacing your Ctrl + V with Windows + V on a Windows computer. By doing this, you can see everything you have Copied to the Clipboard since the computer was turned on, and decide which of them to Paste, rather than just the last one.
If you use a Mac computer, you will want to use the Command button instead of Ctrl (Cmd + X, Cmd + C, Cmd + V) to use these features.
On your phone, you can use these by tapping and holding on any picture or text, and tapping the buttons that appear for Cut, Copy, and Paste.
Remember, using your clipboard makes it really easy to send anyone information you just found, and copy it using Ctrl + C, and paste it using Ctrl + V

This week marked the official halfway point for our Tech Thursdays webinar series in partnership with AARP Vermont. These sessions allow us to showcase the fundamentals of a particular technology skill with older adults from across the country. In our lates session, Damien Royer went into the basics of Google Maps, walking through features like location permissions, route setting, searching your area, and checking out local businesses!
We host these webinars on every other Thursday from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, and they're free for all AARP members nationwide! For those who are not able to attend, AARP records each session and has a "frequently asked questions" page associated with each topic.
As always, we want to thank AARP Vermont for their continued support of this series, and to Erin Boyd for her work in helping us to run each session!
