'A shoestring and a stethoscope': Atlas MD's Josh Umbehr, M.D., on the real economics of direct primary care | Medical Economics 05/29/2026

Ever wished your doctor just had more time for you? That's the whole idea behind what we do. ❤️

Our co-founder, Dr. Josh Umbehr, sat down with Medical Economics to talk about the real economics of direct primary care — and why this model is better for patients AND doctors.

The heart of it is simple. Instead of squeezing visits into seven minutes to satisfy insurance billing, Dr. Umbehr explains: "In this model, I can spend an hour with the patient, talk to a specialist afterward, email the patient back."

That means care built around relationships, not paperwork. It also means real savings for our members — "cheaper meds, better lab pricing and doctor-to-doctor telemedicine consults" — because keeping you out of a broken, expensive system is often the best thing we can do for you.

We're proud of the model we've built here, and we love getting to practice medicine this way.

Direct Primary Care is changing that.

I sat down with Healthcare Rap to talk about how DPC can save families $1,000 a month — and why "too good to be true" doesn't hold up in a world of self-driving cars and space tourism. 🚀

It should be as simple as going to the grocery store — you know what you need, you know what it costs, you walk out the door. That's what we're building in Direct Primary Care.
