What inhaled toxins can be dangerous to birds?
A: Ni****ne, undiluted bleach fumes, Teflon (PFTE), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, paint fumes, aldehydes, sulfur dioxide, air fresheners, hair products, nail polish, scented candles, aerosols, gasoline fumes, mothballs, fumigants, solvents, and many cleaning products, among others.
If inhalation toxicity is suspected, affected birds must be immediately removed to a different, well ventilated area and provided with both supplemental oxygen and supportive care.
Sudden death is a common sequelae to inhaled toxins, especially in cases of Teflon (PFTE) toxicity. See AAV’s Handout on Protecting Your Pet Birds from Household Dangers for more information:https://www.aav.org/resource/resmgr/pdf_2019/aav_household_dangers2020.pdf
