When I first was told I was bipolar at 34 I scoffed at the diagnosis. I had heard only of the negative sides of bipolar such as depression, malaise, and destructive behavior, but that is not how I saw myself. I have come to understand that very few know of the amazing and inspirational side of bipolar. Generally speaking, the highs and lows of bipolar are equal in magnitude. Extreme depression is
followed by an equally extreme ecstasy. One does not come without the other. During such a high I see and experience the world in a brighter, more colorful, more alive way. It is something euphoric that most never get to experience. Through my art, I like to depict my view of the world, the amazing vibrant colors the world blooms into when I experience a “manic episode,” a time when all of life seems MORE. Come, let me show those of you who are not bipolar, small glimpses of the vibrant beauty in the world as seen through the lens of my own diagnosis. I hope you will walk away with the understanding that bipolar is a beautiful inspirational thing. And to those who are also bipolar, I want you to see that it is not a diagnosis to be feared, but a gift and a blessing that gives us the opportunity to experience the world in an excessively more real and full way. Bipolar is more than just the negative symptoms, it is the positive symptoms as well.
