A child’s first manual wheelchair can unlock a world with more.

In Jason’s case, it’s more days spent at his favorite places, more field trips he can participate in, and more neighborhood strolls with his family in Great Bend. Ultimately, his guardians hope the mobility it provides will motivate Jason to be more active and explore, without the fear of getting too fatigued to participate or keep up with his peers. Jason is nonverbal and is usually pretty shy for photos, but the excitement on his face at his final wheelchair fitting spoke volumes.

Mark your calendars! Next week we're meeting with Kansans who are ready to try our Guided Independent Living Assessment (GILA) program. This six week immersive experience helps participants with disabilities determine where they're at with their independent living skills, what accommodations might help when they're ready to live on their own, and more.

Come meet the GILA staff, tour one of the accessible apartments, and meet some of our mentors with disabilities who are there to support participants during their real-world learning experiences.
