Lead the Way
Yesterday was the final luncheon; so, I asked the participants to share some of the best leadership advice they have received (and they did not disappoint). Here is what they shared:
The type of follower you are is the type of follower you attract
Delegate responsibility, not tasks
Under-promise and over-deliver
Be willing to do what you ask others to do
Set the vision, give direction
Be the leader you would follow
Go fast, go alone - but to go far, go together
Look for the second wave, always be looking for what to be in
Surround yourself with those smarter than you - don't be afraid
Be the one who takes problems from others
Don’t do business with flakes
You are in the people business first
Take credit, you'll be responsible for it later - no false humility
Treat everyone the same, be willing to help in all ways
Steel sharpens steel - don't stay dull
Say when you don't know something - admit it
Get down and gritty with the team to move the stone
Learn your boss's job and teach others yours
Always give affirmation
Everything can be fixed - just try something (small experiments)
If it won't matter in 5 years, don't stress about it
Leadership is influence
Work hard to make things simple
What do you want to preserve, avoid, and achieve
There is no task you are above
Be willing to do what you ask of others
Without council plans fail…
Get a good mentor - maybe two
Network!
There is difference between positional and earned leadership
Be relentless with processes but gentle with people
Then I shared some of my own leadership thoughts:
Christian leadership is inspiring others toward a shared vision to accomplish a greater good for God's glory
Christian leadership is people-oriented, challenge-focused, progress-driven, and gospel-centered.
In the Triangle of Change, the one component that you can most influence is yourself. Right physiology is just as important as right thinking and right feeling in getting right behaviors.
Learning to abide in Christ through personal sabbaths is the key to regulating self.
Thank you all for being a part of this community over the last 6 years. I pray that I have future opportunities to encourage you and stir you up to love and good works.
