Officially completed my training and passed my exam! This additional training gives me access to updated evidence based information for my classes. Keep an eye out for some trainings and talks for birth professionals, too!
One of the perks of working on an academic medical campus is that I can take advantage of things like OB/GYN grand rounds. Today's topic was teaching, and I was struck by the explanation that we can't learn body-intensive skills (like surgery) if our frontal lobes are too engaged. Just like skiing or dancing- these are skills we have to learn with our bodies, and in order to get into our bodies and access our abilities, we can't be overstimulating our brains with questions, directions and intense information. The same is true in labor. A laboring person needs to get into their body and FEEL and tap into their abilities. They can't do that when they are being told the risks of a cesarean, or while watching a monitor with blips and buzzers.

"...Brenning felt her decision to opt for medication in the midst of a painful labor was ill-informed. "I had no prior knowledge as to what that concoction of medication could do to my body. I'd never had any kind of anesthesia before like that." Her blood pressure dropped. "They do hand you a sheet of paper with all of the risks and all of that on it, but when you're in full blown labor and you're in pain, and all you can think about is making it stop, you're not going to read it. Who does that? Like, 'Yeah, hold on, I'm having a major contraction, let me just read through these risks really quick.'""

My name is Katie. I'm a researcher, educator and passionate advocate for moms, babies and families. I'm also the mom of two kids under 5. I was fortunate to receive excellent childbirth education which prepared me for two beautiful, transformative birth experiences, but the postpartum period was challenging and isolating with my first, and then extremely difficult when I faced post partum anxiety and depression after my second. Thankfully, I had access to great supports and was able to recover.
Because of my experiences, I am proud to be the President of a new Denver-based non-profit to provide high quality educational and support services to parents and families from diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
