After living it for so many years, and talking to so many people around the country---- I have a deep insight into what schools are really struggling with right now.

It's NOT apathy.
Or burnout.
Not even resistance.

What we’re facing is something deeper: a widespread lack of emotional literacy.

Emotional literacy is the ability to recognize, respond to, and regulate the emotional dynamics in yourself and others.
When it’s missing, trust erodes. People shut down and even small changes feel threatening.
That’s why I’ve developed a new keynote for the 2025–2026 school year for educators, leaders, and staff who are stretched thin and tired of surface-level solutions or one more initiative.

This work is about giving people a language for what they’re feeling, a framework to lead and teach through it, and a reason to believe that trust is still possible.

If you’re planning back-to-school PD or opening-day sessions, let’s talk. If you are part of an associate who needs to hear this, let me know.

We must do more than just motivate.
We have to make it meaningful.

I read constantly. Mostly non-fiction. A book jumps out when it is different, impactful, AND fun to read. Jess Pettitt's book "Almost Doing Good" meets you wherever you are with DEI. I learned how many well-intentioned ideas fall short, and why we should try anyway. I also learned that even if you aren't a believer in DEI, you are dealing with it anyway, regardless of industry. No matter where you are, you feel more empowered as you read, not like a tool for doing the wrong thing. I know Jess: brilliant, benevolent badass. Check it out and lmk what you think! When you're out and about and encounter someone cranky or upset, they may be struggling with their mental health. Recognize that other people's behavior isn't about you. They are doing the best they can in that moment...just like you. Connect and be kind.

Helena and Milton will hold our attention for about two weeks, but the hundreds of thousands of people facing serious trauma will be in our ranks forever. Having lost family, their homes, or their community, folks may temporarily or permanently relocate to our neighborhoods and more than anything, will need our patience and understanding....
AND, we always have hundreds of thousands in our ranks facing serious trauma, who need our patience and understanding.

How do we tell who they are? We can't. There is no badge. People often show few, if any signs. Maybe it's someone who gets short with you. It could be someone who just needs a kind word to rescue them from their inner thoughts.

You never know who is facing trauma.
There is a battle YOU are carrying that others know nothing about.

Be compassionate. Be patient. Be kind. LOVE your neighbors every day.
Reminder..... we are all neighbors.
