Butterfly Pavilion
Our mission is to foster an appreciation of invertebrates while educating the public about the importance of conservation of threatened habitats in the tropics and around the world. Butterfly Pavilion was the nation's first stand-alone nonprofit insect zoo! In our exhibits visitors see and interact with live invertebrates from around the globe!
Last Thursday, Butterfly Pavilion’s outdoor gardens were buzzing with life!
Our team was called outside to monitor a wild honey bee swarm that had settled into one of our unused hive boxes. Honey bees swarm when their colony becomes too crowded. A new queen leaves with about half of the worker bees to search for a new place to establish a hive. This is the natural way honey bee colonies reproduce and expand.
While a swarm may look intimidating, honey bees are generally very docile during this process. Because they have no hive to defend, their focus is on protecting the queen and finding a suitable new home.
As luck would have it, this swarm chose one of our empty hive boxes right outside our Beyond the Hive exhibit! You shoudl even be able to spot the colony when you visit Crawl-A-See-Em.
