We are happy to announce that we have been approved and graded as All India Radio artists! This would not have been possible without the inspiration, perseverance, guidance and support of our guru, Shri S.R. Janakiraman, our friends and family, and our well-wishers, all of whom believed in us and encouraged us to pursue this important distinction! We look forward to recording our music "ON AIR"!

During the worldwide lockdown, musicians everywhere have been looking for a way to synchronize their performances despite being geographically separated. We can, of course, synchronize pre-recorded videos, but can we synchronize live music? All of us are familiar with the "lag" or "delay" experienced when using Skype or Zoom chats. This prevents group rendition of songs, maintaining common tALam, and makes spontaneous interaction between artists, e.g. for kalpanasvaram, impossible - or is it?

Along with Karthik Venkataraman, we have engineered a solution that, we hope, will enable us (Rohin Iyer in Toronto and Ashwin Iyer in Edmonton) to present live, synchronized Carnatic music with spontaneous improvisation. Our next (Part 5) rare varnam is Shri Tiger Varadachariyar's varnam in janaranjani, "vanajAkShi ninnE kOri". Like our previous posts in maNiraNgu and vAcaspati, the madhyamakAlA gait of this varnam is synonymous with the rapid-fire and zigzag style with which Shri Tiger rendered kalpanA swarams -- a force to be reckoned with -- making it a challenge to render and accompany! It is one of three varnams spontaneously composed and taught to our guru Shri S R Janakiraman and notated by him along with Shri MD Ramanathan, who was his classmate in kalAkshEtrA. We are indeed lucky to be among the few to know these rare compositions.
