Happy Flag Day and 251st Anniversary of the U.S. Army!

As a U.S. Army Veteran, I am proud this branch of our armed forces represents the strength and resilience of our nation. Throughout our history, soldiers have answered the call to protect our freedoms, defend democracy, and safeguard the values we hold dear. We owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the brave individuals who have served, sacrificed, and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Our next Pride Month spotlight is LGBTQ+ rights activist Barbara Gittings, who dedicated her life to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.

In 1958, Gittings was asked to start a chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) - the first le***an civil rights organization in the U.S. - in New York City. From 1963 to 1966, she edited the DOB's magazine "The Ladder." Gittings implemented progressive changes in the magazine including adding the subtitle "A Le***an Review" and featuring a picture of le***an women on the cover.

Gittings also participated in many of the earliest LGBTQ+ protests in the United States, including the Stonewall Riots. In the 1970s, she joined the Task Force on Gay Liberation in the American Library Association. Gittings spent years working with libraries and campaigning for them to include positive gay- and le***an-themed material.
