"Following the French tradition of luxe, calme et volupté my landscapes were composed with animated, brightly-colored shapes with rich pigmentation. To celebrate yellow fields, white and red cottages, cerulean skies and above all the radiant energies of light and air was almost a kind of artistic intoxication. While I sought to raise this pictorial sensateness to extremes, this was not haphazard expressionism with paint indiscriminately strewn about the canvas; rather I intuitively related and formed my image at every step from of the way."
- George McNeil's 1984 essay "Landscapes and Figures of the Mind"
