Fitness Friday: Bird Dog Edition 🐦🐶

(Despite the name, no actual birds or dogs are involved 👍)

Bird dog works the core, back, glutes, and shoulders, while also targeting balance and postural control. Because you’re lifting opposite arm and leg at the same time, it’s a great way to challenge bilateral coordination and motor planning, too.

Start on hands and knees, then slowly extend one arm and the opposite leg. Hold steady, then switch sides. The goal is controlled movement - not how fast you can finish (even if Carolyn makes it look easy!). Try balancing a beanbag or stuffed animal on your back for an extra challenge! ✨

While most pediatricians do developmental screenings, they only get a snapshot of your child during brief appointments. You see your child every day.

Parents and caregivers are often the first to notice when something feels different. If you have a concern, trust your instincts and ask questions. Seeking a PT, OT, SLP, and/or feeding evaluation doesn't mean something is wrong - it simply gives you more information and support to help your child thrive.

You know your child best. If you're wondering whether your child could benefit from extra support, we're here to listen, answer questions, and help you take the next step - without pressure or judgment.

As we head into Independence Day, we’re reflecting on the many ways Boston Ability Center clinicians empower children to participate more fully in their everyday lives.

At the BAC, we recognize that independence and autonomy look different for every child. Our goal is to meet each child where they are, honor their individual strengths, and support progress in a way that respects their unique needs & preferences.

💪 BAC PTs help kids explore movement in ways that work best for their bodies and access different environments with confidence.
✋ BAC OTs empower kids to engage in meaningful daily activities, like getting dressed, participating at school, and playing.
💬 BAC SLPs honor all forms of communication and promote self-advocacy from the start by helping kids express themselves in ways that feel authentic and accessible.
🍎 BAC feeding specialists focus on building trust at the table and promoting safe, positive, pressure-free experiences related to food exploration.

What’s something your child has done recently that made them feel proud, capable, or empowered? Share with us in the comments - we’d love to celebrate alongside you!
