Recently we have had some questions about surcharges from the Merit Rating Bureau. Anything over $1000, up to $5,000, is a 3 SDIP point surcharge, and anything over $5,000 is a 4 SDIP point surcharge. Major and minor traffic violations are determined at the discretion of the Merit Rating Bureau. Breaking minor road rules, like speed or improper passing, incurs a 2 SDIP point surcharge.
In Massachusetts, surcharges on auto insurance due to accidents or traffic violations typically last for six years from the date of the incident. While the surcharge's impact on your premium may lessen after three years, provided there are no new violations or at-fault accidents, the incident remains on your driving record for the full six years.
