Words cannot describe how incredibly sad this loss is.
Kyle Busch, nicknamed “Rowdy Busch” and “Wild Thing,” was an icon in NASCAR. When I first started following racing in 2006, he was in his sophomore season in what was then the NEXTEL Cup series, and he was driving for Rick Hendrick in the #5 that was made famous by Geoffrey Bodine and Terry Labonte. Busch got his first Cup win at California in 2005, and also won the first “Car of Tomorrow” race at Bristol in a fierce battle with Jeff Burton, and I’ll never forget in victory lane, Kyle commented on the CoT saying “This car SUCKS” much to the irritation of NASCAR. 😆
In 2008, Busch moved to Joe Gibbs Racing, who had just shifted from Chevy to Toyota, and the iconic #18 car made famous by drivers like Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte. Busch drove to victory at Atlanta, giving Toyota its first Cup victory and first Cup victory for a foreign manufacturer since 1954. He went on to win 7 more times in 2008. One of the moments that made him a villain for me and many fans was his run-in with Dale Earnhardt Jr. who was trying to break a winless streak.
One of the gutsiest season performances by Busch was in 2015 when won his first cup championship after he got injured after horrible crash in the O’Riley race at Daytona before the Daytona 500, missing the first 11 races that year.
He went to Richard Childress Racing in 2023, driving the #8 car. He won 3 races that year, but struggled to find success in the following years.
Two weeks ago, he asked for a doctor after the race at Watkins Glen, and was admitted to the hospital with a “severe illness, and at 6pm yesterday evening, I was shocked to learn that the 41 year old had died, and right away I immediately thought of my friend who had been a KB fan ever since I’ve known him.
Kyle Busch was the younger brother of former NASCAR Champion Kurt, husband to wife Samantha, and father to son Brexton and daughter Lennix.
Kyle has won a combined 234 races in NASCAR’s top 3 series.
My thoughts are with my friend Taylor, the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and the Childress Family. This is an unthinkable tragedy.
RIP Kyle Busch 💔
