The Andes Amazon Fund (AAF) is a multi-donor grant-making initiative that supports the conservation of the Andes-Amazon of Peru and surrounding countries through the designation and effective management of protected areas and indigenous reserves. The Amazon headwaters are home to diverse ecosystems that are critical to global climate systems. AAF deploys three strategies that focus on both the short- and long-term: a) to establish new, legally-recognized protected areas and indigenous lands, b) to consolidate ongoing management for target areas, and c) to secure financing for the management of these areas. Since 2015, AAF has helped to protect over 6.6 million acres of land and aims to protect an additional 9.6 million acres in the region by the end of 2018.

Did you know today is the Day of Protected and Conserved Areas of Latin America and the Caribbean? 🌎

To celebrate, we're taking a closer look at the Andes-Amazon, where an incredible 298,000 acres are under coordinated management in Ecuador’s Tropical Andes. 🇪🇨🏔️🦅

The Provincial System of Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas of Pichincha (known locally as “SPACUS-P”) is not just a network of conservation areas—it is a province-wide management system in practice. By integrating governance, planning, and community participation, Pichincha is managing its ecosystems as a connected territory, which supports long-term sustainability for both nature and people.

What this management support makes possible:

⛰️ Coordinated management across four interconnected landscapes
🐆 Protection of key species through habitat connectivity and monitoring
💧 Secured watersheds that sustain communities and regional water cycles
🏦 Financial strategies to support long-term conservation

Led by the Provincial Government of Pichincha, with technical support from Fundación Paisajes Sostenibles and financial contributions from Andes Amazon Fund, , , and the .
