Nearly one in three US households spends more than 30% of their income on housing. Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City is proving that comprehensive counseling can change that.

In 2025, 128 households completed financial literacy workshops on homeownership, budgeting and credit. The results go beyond a number on a page.

"Habitat gave me the tools I needed and now my kids and I are finally safe. We don't have to worry about being homeless again," said Kerra, a program participant.

This is what looks like.

As a member of NCRC's Housing Counseling Network, Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City gains access to resources like the Wells Fargo Keeping People Housed grant to expand their services and reach more families. Housing counseling is not just about getting people into homes. It is about keeping them there.

Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr came to the 2026 Just Economy Conference with a clear message for community advocates.

He sat down with NCRC President and CEO Jesse Van Tol for a 33-minute conversation on CRA, AI in banking, fair lending and what it would take to build a financial system designed for low- and moderate-income people.

"Let's figure out how to support your work more around the country," Barr said.

A single mother of three just got the keys to her first home.

Iveliz always dreamed of owning a home for her family. But homeownership has become harder to reach for millions of households. From 2000 to 2024, median home prices rose 207% while median income grew only 155%.

A friend referred Iveliz to New Jersey Citizen Action Education Fund, an NCRC member organization. With guidance from a HUD-certified housing counselor, she built her credit, applied for down payment assistance programs, and secured a $10,000 first-time homebuyer grant for her new home in Woodbury, New Jersey.

Supported by the NCRC FEF-HCS grant, NJCAEF has guided 13 additional households to homeownership in the first six months of the grant period alone.

Congratulations to the entire NJCAEF team for a job well done. Welcome home, Iveliz
