Four years ago, Hyacinth Tucker launched Laundrybasketdelivery, a Bowie, Maryland-based business offering full-service laundry pickup, cleaning, and delivery across the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Today, The Laundry Basket washes nearly 7,000 pounds of laundry each month for busy individuals and families, as well as for gyms, spas, medical practices, and government facilities throughout the region.
Digital tools helped fuel that growth. Personalized discounts help Hyacinth reach new customers, reward loyal ones, and keep her business growing.
But a new Maryland law could make those discounts harder to offer by requiring warning labels alongside certain digital promotions — a change Hyacinth worries could confuse customers and undermine trust.
“We use personalized discounts to bring in customers and build loyalty,” Hyacinth says. “I’m concerned that these new requirements could make that harder, slowing our growth and hindering our success.”

Today, California lawmakers are holding a hearing on the COMPETE Act (AB 1776).
California is already a tough place to build and grow a small business. This bill would make it tougher.
In a new op-ed, UC Davis professor Hemant Bhargava warns that AB 1776 would dramatically expand California antitrust law — making it much easier for businesses to sue one another over common competitive practices like offering discounts, integrating services, or choosing business partners.
For small businesses, that could mean more uncertainty around the digital tools and integrated services they use every day to reach customers, save time, and grow.
Lawmakers should scrap AB 1776.
