The relationship between D.C. and France is a special one — and we learned a lot about it yesterdday with Off The Mall Tours.

Of course there’s the Marquis de Lafayette, the renowned French aristocrat and American Revolutionary War General, and Pierre L’Enfant, a French architect whose dream of planning the streets capes of D.C. only came to fruition after his death. But did you know the Renwick Gallery and Eisenhower Building were influenced by French architectural styles like Beaux Arts and Second Empire?

And then there’s other unique DC-French connections like DC-born, Howard educated Lillian Evanti, who became a successful opera singer in France and the first African American woman to be hired by a European opera house, and Jean Jules Jusserand, the longtime French Ambassador to the U.S. who founded the Alliance Française’s DC chapter.

And of course, we can’t forget our favorite local connection to France — the AUP DC alumni group! 🇫🇷🇺🇸

Thanks to Katie for being our fearless, fun, super knowledgeable tour guide and for the AUP DC alum who braved the DC weather to have an unforgettable learning experience!
