Pictured below is FINCA co-founder and creator of Village Banking, John Hatch, disbursing one of the first loans to farmers in Bolivia.

In 1984, John introduced the concept of providing small loans through a group guarantee model rather than requiring collateral, making financial services accessible to low-income entrepreneurs.

That year, FINCA distributed $50 loans to 12,600 women in Bolivia through Village Banks, achieving an impressive 98% repayment rate. These groups of entrepreneurs supported one another's loans, helping members grow their businesses, increase their incomes, and strengthen their communities.
