Defending Rights & Dissent is product of the merger between the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and the Defending Dissent Foundation. The Bill of Rights Defense Committee was founded in 2001 to fight the Patriot Act and the Defending Dissent Foundation was founded all the way back in 1960 to work for the abolition of the House Un-American Activities Committee. On June 17, 2022, British Home Sec. Priti Patel signs an extradition order to send WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange to the U.S to face charges under the Espionage Act for publishing — the first such charges for a journalist.

On this day in 1918, Eugene Debs delivered an anti-war speech for which he was convicted under the Espionage Act and sentenced to a decade in prison.
It’s long past time to reform this law and end its abuse against dissent, against whistleblowers, & against the press, for good.
