Neil the Seal has 1.7 million fans, but the attention around him is becoming a safety problem. 🦭

The five-year-old southern elephant seal returned to Tasmania in June weighing roughly 2,200 pounds, blocking roads, crushing barriers and drawing crowds. Wildlife officials say Neil is still a wild animal, and close approaches can endanger both him and the people trying to photograph him.

Neil has now returned to sea. Authorities expect more visits as he grows, and every return will demand more space.

Supporters are calling for mobile exclusion zones, clearer enforcement and a formal non-lethal protection plan whenever Neil comes ashore. The idea treats his visits as a predictable wildlife-management challenge rather than a fresh emergency every time.

Neil will keep moving. Roads, beaches and crowds will change. A portable response could protect both the seal and the people drawn to him.
