Our friends in the Department of Botany are seeking someone to serve a short-term contract.

The individual will be tasked with importing digital records of specimens from the Botany conveyor mass digitization project. Transcription data will be assessed and compiled in to sets for processing. Transcription sets will be converted to standards of the NMNH EMu catalog for botanical records. Missing, partial or non-standard data will be resolved by hand or using SQL scripts and Access macros provided by the Department of Botany. Metadata will be conformed to EMu requirements.

Summary: This position is located in the Office of Exhibits (OE) at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The purpose of the position is to facilitate integration of innovative new media and digital technologies into exhibitions that include but are not limited to web, object-based media, social media, mobile, and digital interactivity with a purpose of enriching visitor experiences.

Duties

• Researches and introduces new media applications and technologies to Office of Exhibits that will enhance the overall visitor experience in the exhibit settings.
• Helps coordinate and implement creative digital projects and programs that create educational, interactive experiences in multiple contexts and platforms (web, mobile, social, exhibit interactive) for exhibits.
• Utilizes a combination of data sources and research techniques to measure, evaluate and report on effectiveness of new media audience engagement to inform user-experience planning and development.
• Updates exhibition-related content on NMNH website and plans for online resources/ develops online versions of content related to new exhibitions.
• Develops materials, reports and presentations related to new media engagement policies and best practices, and coordinates with other departments participating in online outreach (web, social, mobile, exhibit interactives).
• Serves as consultant on various exhibit teams and coordinates with necessary SI units and outside contractors and partners as needed regarding project content and most effective media digital approaches.
